Global warming is going to move our wheat belt up into Canada within 50 years. We think of hunger in terms of other places. But right now our food banks are suffering because donations have fallen off and more and more Americans are turning up who need food.

    There’s hunger in America.

I haven’t heard of World Food Day, but I think everyone should donate food or money to feed people all year round. It seems like people only get generous around the holiday season, but people need food everyday, not just near x-mas.

Firstly love the drawing. Who is the artist? Secondly I think World food day should emphasize more that the problem with people going hungry worldwide is more political than lack of food or resources to grow food. Food that is produced often doesn’t get to where it is needed because the politicians or power brokers restrict it for their own purposes. Limitations are placed on food production to keep the prices up or control populations. Same can be said for health services. Even in the US food distribution is controled by the government in such areas as paying farmers not to produce to keep prices up and controlling consumption by the disadvantaged by limiting food stamps. Same for medical care.

  • David Millar

It’s sad that people *anywhere* are hungry, especially with rich CEOs and business executives out there spending money that doesn’t belong to them or throwing away money that people work hard to earn for their company. It’s a shame the world is that way.

  • Trish
    Oct 17, 2008 at 9:36 am

I find it shameful how our government pays farmers subsidies just to have their crops thrown into a warehouse to rot, because they want to import those foods in instead to support other countries. That food can feed so many.

While World Food Day is a step in the right direction the problem of hunger doesn’t exsist on just one day. If it could be kept in the forefront of everyones minds all year long a solution might be found. In my son’s school they have a day just about every month where the children in each class are told a food item for their class to bring in that day and the food is then donated to our town food bank. When our local super market has a program of collecting points towards a free turkey for Thanksgiving the children bring in extra points and they are collected and turkeys are given to the food bank. In our home we try every month to buy extra can goods and once a month bring the bag to the food bank drop off. We are trying to instill an awareness in our children that there are people who need and should get our help if we are able to give it.. We also have them involved in gifts for children at Christmas time through the angel trees in our local churches and stores. I think this awareness needs to be instilled in the children at home and school so when their generation is in charge maybe they will find an answer we have not yet found.

Security is very important regarding the delivery of foos and needed supplies to needy people around the world. Too many times there are news reports of the local governments stalling or preventing the food from reaching its intended recipients.

I take my children with me once a week on my day off, and we deliver food to the people who are housebound and cannot come to the Community Pantry; I can tell you that the quantity and quality of the food is declining (and the people who work there are ANGELS), and they are getting new clients every week. Thank you for getting the word out!!!!

We give in two ways; We have “Love Kitchen in our small community started only with lunch now serving six days a week three meals a day; nuger shoudl have no questions asked and no donations from eaters asked; all volunters; our church initiated the “Love Kitchen” and today the postal service will pick up cans and goods to be donated. Thanks to Judge Billy Neville who started and gave so much for others to have a warm meal. Also may I suggest another world charity; check the rating; we give to support in the Cental/Middle America; “Feed the Poor”. Times are tight one day each of us may be too poor to eat. This should not happen; we all in each of us have something to give. ThanksSW

It’s great that we are bringing awareness to world hunger, but please realize that the U.S. *does indeed* contribute to those countries that need help. In 2007, via the World Food Program alone, the U.S. gave $670 million. I disagree that children in schools should be *told* to bring in food items for charity. Some families can’t afford to do that. All-in-all, a good website. Thanks for the link.

I deliver food in our area twice a month with my mom…I hope to become more involved this year. Stores donate the food and its usually really awesome stuff and you can tell the people that receive the food… it just makes their day… its really fun to be involved in this

  • Julianne
    Oct 18, 2008 at 2:15 pm

The greatest gift we could give those who are hungry in other countries is the training to farm food properly. Help them acquire REAL seeds, not hybrids or chemically altered. So that they can harvest seeds for next years crops with this years food supply. Help them with irrigation. Teach them skills that can make them self-sufficient instead of handing them white rice that is totally deficient of any health giving value.

I have heard of World Food Day and thank you for directing us to the website. In our community there are many agencies and places where people can go if they are struggling and cannot feed their themselves or their families. Our city is very diligent about making those opportunities public via news, dialing 211, etc. and hopefully those that need the help take advantage of it. I feel though for people who don’t live in cities or communities that offer help when it is desperately needed. I agree with what someone else posted, no one in America (or anywhere in the world for that matter) should go hungry! On another note - did I mention I love surprises! Thank you for participating in Blogtoberfest! It is so much fun to wonder with great anticipation what the prize is!

Thanks for the chance to win! We just completed a week of the International World Food Prize in IA. This is a recognition of Dr. Borgland and annual Laurettes that have contributed to the resolution of World Hunger. Their World Headquarters are in Des Moines. My daughter was fourtunante to attend and have a paper reviewed there when she was in high school. This year they acknowledged Mr. McGovern and Senator Dole.

That’s a great idea to have a “World Food Day”. Perhaps it will make more people aware of the food shortages in the world. We have lots of food shelfs in this area, where people can donate food to families that need it. They have had a huge increase this year of families needing assistance, because of job losses and the increase in gas and oil prices. Thanks for the contest!

Give of yourself to others is very rewarding.
Just helping to feed the less fortunate in a soup kitchen or making bag lunches for the homeless can nourish the soul.
