Top St. Patrick’s Day Parades

Dublin's St. Patrick's Day parade
It seems that every city, no matter what size its Irish population, hosts a St. Patrick’s Day parade these days. From Japan to Vancouver to South Carolina, they bring out the bagpipes and the green hats. However, there are a few cities that have become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Below are my picks for the top places to watch a St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Dublin. The mother of all St. Patrick’s Day parades, the culmination of four days of festivities, steps off from Parnell Square in Dublin at noon on March 17.

Boston. Greater Boston has no fewer than six different St. Patrick’s Day parades, but the best of these is the South Boston parade, in the heart of the city’s Irish-American community. This one steps off at 1pm on March 16 on Broadway Avenue in South Boston.

New York City. New York City’s parade steps off at 11am on March 17, at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue, preceded by a mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The parade continues down Fifth Avenue to 86th Street.

Cleveland. The 141st Cleveland St. Patrick’s Day parade will step off on March 17 at 104pm from East 18th Street and Superior Avenue. The procession will travel west on Superior to Public Square, turns north on East Roadway to Rockwell, turns right onto Rockwell and will disband on Rockwell behind the Cleveland Public Library.

Chicago. Chicago’s parade begins at noon on March 15. It starts at Balbo and Columbus and proceeds north on Columbus Drive. The viewing stand will be located in front of Buckingham Fountain. The dying of the Chicago River green will take place at 1045am on the 15th.
