The Ides of September
by Sandy Mitchell on September 13th, 2008
We think primarily of the Roman calendar term “Ides” in terms of March, that date made famous due to the murder of Julius Caesar. However, there are “ides” in every month. It’s the 15th of March, May, July, and October and the 13th of every other month. The Ides of September was the cause for a celebration during ancient Roman times. The date began the Ludi Romani, a four-day series of sports and skill games. The occasion first started in 336 B.C. as a single day event and grew to a four-day event after Caesar’s death to honor him.
