The Christmas Pickle: An Ornament of Tradition

by Liberty on December 7th, 2007

What seems like a very odd choice for a Christmas tree ornament is actually a deep-rooted tradition that originated in Germany. The Christmas Pickle is said to bring good luck, and was always the last ornament put on the tree.

On Christmas morning, the first child to find the pickle scored a little extra something left behind by The Jolly Old Elf, himself. This tradition was encouraged so that the children may appreciate all the ornaments on the tree, instead of rushing to see what St. Nick had left for them.

Quite an endearing little tradition, isn’t it? Does your family do this? Are there other tree/ornament favorites for your family? Please share. We’d love to hear.

That’s such a neat - albeit totally weird! - idea. You could probably do it with any oddity. I’m thinking our kids would get more out of a banana. :p

As a matter of fact my daughter when she was in the 6th grade made such pickle for a school project and we have followed said tradition every year since. All My kids are grown and still to this day when they come home for Christmas they all still look for the pickle. Although it is tattered and torn the love and fun it brings to our home is wonderful.

Isn’t it funny how the most worn out, shabby ornament made in 1st grade seems so special? My mom has a perfect, elegant tree each year since the kids haven’t been “helping”, but she still brings out our five ummm….precious ornaments. (Five kids-five 1st grade Christmas ornaments. Was that part of the 1st grade curriculum?)

Anyway, I’ve noticed that none of us have ornaments from school on the trees from this generation of little guys, so this year, we’re going to have an ornament making marathon. (Yikes. Friday is getting close. I’d better start getting supplies together!)
