Ruth at b5media’s “Let’s Visit Asia,” reminds us that May 19 is Vesak Day through the Buddhist countries of Asia. This day, sometimes called “Buddha’s Birthday,” celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha.
To celebrate Buddhists assemble at their temples for services, hymns, and offerings of jost sticks and flowers.

Today is Cinco de Mayo, the holiday that celebrates Mexico’s victory in the Battle of Puebla–a turning point in the war for Mexican Independence. Ironically, the holiday is celebrated more in the United States than in most parts of Mexico. (The town of Puebla does have an annual pagent.)

May 2 is Flag Day in Poland. Established in 2004, the day falls between Labor Day (May 1), a former Soviet holiday and now a Polish state holiday, and Constitution Day (May 3). Traditionally, Poles fly the white and red flag all three days and enjoy a nice three-day break from work.
