National Flag of Canada Day
by Sandy Mitchell on February 15th, 2008
February 15 is the National Flag of Canada Day. Canada’s distinctive red and white, maple leaf flag was made official on this date in 1965 and made an official holiday in 1996. The day is marked by public ceremonies and the showing of the flag all over Canada.
A few facts about Canada’s flag:
- Although the present flag wasn’t adopted until 1965, a form of the maple leaf flag was used since 1868.
- The Canadian flag is twice as long as it is wide.
- The Canadian flag was designed by Dr. George Stanley, a professor at the Royal Military Institute in Kingston, Ontario
- The red and white colors were designated Canada’s official colors by His Royal Majesty King George V in 1921
