I added a Valentine’s Day message to this Victorian bird scrap piece. Please feel free to use it to create a Valentine’s Day card or piece of mixed media art for someone you love.
If I can find where I put the rest of my Valentine’s Day cards and ephemera pieces before February 14th, I’ll post them, too. (Note to self-never completely reorganize the art studio again…)
I made this Valentine’s Day card the other year. Simply cut out three hearts, layer them on card stock and then stamp “Happy Valentine’s Day” all over the layers randomly. Print a vintage bird image (I use one of the many Flickr groups that have vintage images from before 1920.) and adhere it to the top of the heart stack.
You can make this card really masculine by using a tan or brown color instead of red for the middle heart or you can make it more feminine by choosing a cute little robin image and switching one of the hearts out for a paper lace heart shaped doily.
Today, we get to celebrate Chinese New Year. I thought it would be fun to have Chinese food, but I didn’t want to make my favorite restaurant deliver on a special holiday, so I hunted around for some delicious recipes.
Let’s start with Chinese style green beans from Busy Family Meals. Mmm. I love these beans. The key is to make sure you don’t overcook them. The best way to eat this dish is with very crisp beans.
Next, let’s move on to Chinese dumplings from Noodles and Rice. Not as good as the entire Dim Sum experience, but still a delicious little treat.
These Chinese Fried Noodles from Nook and Pantry sound heavenly.
Do you have a favorite recipe? I’m always up for more Chinese food adventures.
By the way, 2009 is the Year of the Ox. I couldn’t come up with a good ox craft, but DLTK Kids has an ox related craft and other Chinese New Year kids’ crafts.

You may recall that we made a pathetic gingerbread house for Christmas. So, when the kids wanted to buy a clearanced kit at Target the other day, I was really hesitant. They begged, the kit was super cheap and I gave in. Then, I kept putting off the big building event. Well, we gave it a try today. I had all of the same kids and didn’t even have the engineer help and we had so much fun.
The kit was a train by Create a Treat and the only thing that gave us even a bit of trouble was the part where we had to snap the pieces of the train apart along the scored lines. The tray held the pieces steady while we did the assembly, the icing was pre-mixed…There was even a video about putting the whole kit together:
I’m so looking for this brand next year!

Here’s another vintage Valentine. Postcards were really popular around the turn of the century. This cupid would scare me, but someone thought he was cute enough to send to someone else!
I think I bought it as part of a box lot. I can’t imagine buying it on purpose…
